What Is SEO?

SEO

Search engine optimization is an online strategy which aims to improve the rankings of a particular website in the search engines. By increasing the visibility of a website in Google search engine results, it will be seen by more people and the site’s potential profit will also increase. Many online marketers use SEO as a long term traffic strategy, and they make it a point to constantly research relevant keywords, tweak their webpages, and rearrange their website’s structure.

Many view SEO as a rocket science, but the truth is, it is easier than most people think it is. Anyone can start implementing search optimization techniques, provided they are aware of the three basic components below:

1. Structure of a website.

A website must be structured in such a way that the Google spiders can easily navigate through it (or index it) more quickly. This can be done by observing various “on page” SEO techniques. For example, placing the main keyword phrase in the title, description, and meta tags will give an idea to the search engines what the website is all about. Ease of access is another goal of structuring a website effectively. Ideally, marketers want the search engines and human readers to reach the desired webpage with as fewer clicks as possible. This can be achieved by placing a fully functional navigation bar on each webpage.

2. Relevant Content.

Content is the “food” that attracts the search engines (and also human readers) to a website. Creating fresh, keyword rich content is one of the best ways to optimize a website for higher search engine rankings. If a site contains useful and relevant information in the form of written text, photos, audio, and video, Google will look at it as a trustworthy site that is valuable to the internet audience. Producing fresh, quality content for a website can be done by the marketer on his own, or it can be outsourced to people who offer search engine optimization services.

3. Backlinks.

A backlink is simply an external webpage that links back to a marketer’s own website. The more backlinks a particular website has, the higher the potential for top search engine rankings. Building backlinks takes time and it involves 80% of the work related to search engine optimization. This is the reason why most successful SEO marketers have a daily plan for generating backlinks. Commenting on blogs, subscribing to RSS feeds, spinning article content, and making guest blog posts, are activities which aim to increase the backlink count of a website.

SEO follows clear steps that are easy to follow for those experienced in the field. If a website owner does not have the knowledge, or the inclination, to undertake it, then outsourcing to an SEO expert (which does not have to be expensive) is a smart business option.
